PRETORIA

Founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius and named after his father Andries Pretorius.

Pretoria achieved city status in 1931 and after SA became a republic in 1961, Pretoria remained its administrative capital.

Pretoria’s main street, “Church Street” is the longest urban street in S.A. and believed to be one of the longest straight streets in the world.

The streets are lined with Jacaranda trees which blossom during early spring, giving Pretoria its nick name, “Jacaranda City”.
