Khoisan people inhabited the area from the Stone Age until the arrival of the Dutch settlers in the 17th century.

George, being the geographical hub of commerce and industry to the area was founded in 1811 under British rule and named after the reigning monarch King George III. It is the sixth oldest town in S.A.
